Environment

Ultra Ice is the UK’s preferred supplier to the airline and airline catering industry.

We have therefore worked very hard with the Carbon Trust and Environwise to both reduce our CO2 footprint and the wastage of water that regulalrly occurs in the usual manufacture of ice. Our goal is to make our ice products the less environmentally harmful on the market.

Some specific examples of what we have achieved include:

Dramatically reducing the waste water used to manufacture our products:
Most ice machines waste an average of 40% of the water that goes into them when making ice cubes. The smaller the machine, the more water is wasted. Shiver Ice has taken the waste water that comes from the machines, cleaned it up and reused it, passing it through the system again, reducing the water that goes to drain to only 2%. Plans are in place hold this remaining water and use it for non food applications such as cleaning the outside of our lorries

Reduce our electricity consumption used per bag made by a third:
By using greener pumps and motors wherever possible, multi room freezer storage, low wattage bulbs and appliances we have made a big dent in our energy consumption.

But uniquely to Ultra Ice’s production, the biggest impact has been in the reuse of the ice that hasn’t quite made the grade. This has been used to chill the water entering our production machines, actively reducing the power it would normally take to freeze.

Wherever possible, ensuring our packaging and distribution is conscious of its environmental impact:
The bags you find our ice in are made of a product that you can recycle at your local recycling station (LDPE 4). The boxes which you don’t see in its transportation are made of recycled paper. These are then distributed in full lorry loads to reduce the amount of trips we make. In its production, any of these plastic and paper products that may go to waste are carefully recycled, as are other production necessities from oil and metals, to Fluorescent light tubes and toner cartridges.
